Hi all,

Well, it started 2 years ago with 3 of the IVL club shows and 95 GBs of empty hard drive space.

Today, 2 years later, there is over 80 GBs of audio, video and pics of the band.

Just wanted to say thanks to all who have taken the time to upload content.

It is quite the Hip collection.

I'd like to spend a little time working on the webpage and one of the things that is top on the list of stuff to put up is a FAQ on connecting, uploading and downloading.

I'm looking for some help from all of the users. If you could take a moment to post or email me your 'connection' stories - this is what I'm looking for....

What FTP app are you using (please mention if you are on a Mac or a PC), do you have to alter any of the settings, did you try any FTP apps that did not work, etc.

99% of the email questions I receive about the site deal with connection issues, so I just wanted to compile something that can easily explain questions on apps to use and / or settings to change.

Thanks, and I hope everyone still enjoys using the site.

How do I know what FTP client I'm using (if any)? I never loaded one on. I got Internet Explorer, never had a problem with the site. Maybe in the FAQ you'll want the average download speeds of different connections? I got 56 Kbps and for a regular (4 or 5 MB) song it takes 20 minutes, for a music video, it takes two hours and for a picture, it takes like 20 seconds.

Excellent site, man. I've enjoyed countless hours listening to downloads. I remember a while back, someone said to upload Pascal's Submarine ( the song not vid) cuz it was deleted or something and I tried to upload it but it wouldn't go. No idea to this day what the trouble was.

I'm with you Lord Brazle. I just connect to the server by typing it in the address line of my internet browser.

I do have Smart FTP and have connected using it but no files show up. I'm curious as to why this happens.

hey man...................congrats!!!!
I use either bulletproof ftp or the internet explorer browser......I have dsl and never have any real connection problems and any of the problems i usually have are at my end and not yours. It takes about three-ten minutes per song for me

keep up the great work!

Jerremy,

First off, Thanks so much for providing us with a great service. You and Lance keep this whole "family" together. :thumb:

Here is what I posted in a previous thread:

"I posted about SmartFTP a while ago. It does work. Here is what I told Rg:

"Rg,

I too had the same issue with SmartFTP. All you need to do is go into TOOLS-->
SETTINGS
In the left pane select TRANSFER

In the top section of the right pane where it says "Directory Listing Options", make sure only "Show all files (-a)" and "Recursive (-R)" are checked. All others should be unchecked. I hope this helps. It took me a long time to figure out what was going on!

Cheers!

Chad"

This should do it. One of the biggest reasons you can not connect at all is because the slots are almost always full. This is one of the few (if not THE only) Hip FTP server out there right now and with only 10 available slots, they fill up quick. The server will not tell you that they are full though. If you use SmartFTP with the default settings and you ARE able to connect, the directory will not list. This is why you need to follow the settings I outlined above. I have had no problems at all, but it sometimes takes a few days to connect. I have it set to retry every 180 sec with unlimited tries. I like to connect to the server and set up a bunch of shows in my global queue, then log off and hit start (the little play button in the global queue). You must remember to log off, because you can not have 2 concurrent connnections (you'd be taking up 2 slots bud!). Good luck!

Cheers!

Chad"

Best of luck to you Jerremy!

Hi all,

Thanks for the kind words and the info.

As I said in my post, I'll be using the FTP info to create the FTP FAQ. :)

hipkid33 - I believe that Smart FTP is one that I get a lot of questions on - connecting with no directory listing. Thanks for the specific info on that.

I used to have problems with SmartFTP too, but set it up like hipkid33 said. It works great now. Well worth the effort too. SmartFTP is by far the best program I've found.

Jerremy,

I have 2 questions for you.

I know you have 5 d/l slots, how many upload slots?

Is it possible to add a simple browsing logon using low bandwidth? Sometimes I like to login just to see whats new and to compare what I have to see if I want to d/l or u/l anything. I hate using up a high bandwidth slot that others could be using to d/l.

Thanks and keep up the great work!

That's a great idea. I've used a browsing login on other FTP sites and it works really well. It also let's you get an exact path and filenames, so that you can queue up a d/l for later. I'm no expert so maybe there are ways to do this normally, but when I've queued up a d/l before connecting, I have been able to time the software to attempt a connection at a certain time over-night, and automatically disconnect once the d/l is complete. That would surely help to keep the lines open, some-what.
