Archive.org is a terrific source for live recordings and it's sorely missing The Tragically Hip. (Here's the current list.) Is there any reason they shouldn't be there? Perhaps all it requires is for someone to ask. I'm happy to keep running thehiptracker, thehundredthmeridian, and hipfans but I don't have the time or resources to update, let alone maintain them any more. And the folks over at archive have everything already in place to host, distribute, catalogue, convert, etc.
As well it will expose new music fans to The Hip's music... and entice tapers to go to their shows.
Thoughts?

Probably good idea Chris. We all know how much work you put into maintaining these sites and I don't think it'd be presumptuous of me to thank you on behalf of everyone. Hiptracker is my biggest source of hip boots, and as great as it is to have our own little community in the tracker it probably wouldn't hurt to get the music out there and more accessible on something like archive.org. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help (after exams) in terms of seeding or loading any shows. I don't have a huge volume of shows but I've got some rarities that people are always interested in.

Thanks Matt. If The Hip give permission to archive.org for their shows to be hosted it'll be up to us as fans to post shows. I know one of the archive.org admins and will see if there is a fast way to post a large collection of shows as a batch without going through the uploader process. If not we've got lots of uploading ahead of us!

The lines of communication between fans and band have certainly improved since MAv came on the scene. Maybe now is the time to try again?
Aside from Pauls new record nothing, to our knowledge, is happening with The Hip so maybe this request won't get missed?

The best thing to do is send a note to archive.org stating that their shows can be recorded by fans, the recordings can be freely traded, that soundboard recordings are not allowed, and that the recordings can be hosted on archive.org. As well they can stipulate if they want all file formats to be available. For example a number of bands only allow lossless - no MP3s, no streaming.srb wrote:I believe all the hip needs to do is to post somewhere on thehip.com their policy regarding recording shows.
Once that is up, Archive.org links to it and we're good to go.
The only downside is they don't host video.
A note on their site stating an official policy could work but I think it needs to explicitly state that they are OK with the recordings being posted to archive.org.

I'm an artist who would like to be included in the Archive, what do I need to do?
We'd love to have you! Just write to us at etree at archive dot org in English giving some kind of permission for us to archive your shows for public download and noncommercial, royalty-free circulation. It does not need to be a formally worded declaration, and can come from anyone you feel has the "say-so." We just need to be clear on how you feel about the project. We will put relevant quotes onto a new "collection" page (examples) for your performances, along with a link to your official website.
It is necessary for you to email us at etree at archive dot org in order to create a new section. We want to be sure that the go-ahead really is coming from you. Please do not attempt to create your own collection, or to upload any of the band's shows, in advance of receiving an emailed confirmation message from curators; such attempts may significantly complicate or delay the curators' setup process.
You can give as much or as little scope for archiving as you like. Some bands place limits on what can be hosted, and we can accomodate those. Archive Curators, volunteer fans who have proven to be in line with the spirit of this archive, will attempt to screen contributions for OK'ed material only.
At the same time you give the go-ahead, feel free to pass along any notes or policy links on your general taping/trading stance as well. You don't need to have a formal written or posted policy before inclusion, but we'd like to know how you feel about the topic.
Besides fans' sending their copies of your shows, you can also prepare and upload your own live recordings to the Archive, if you like. In fact, if you'd like to limit your material to selected contributions from you only, please just let us know.
If you have any questions about the project, please ask us anytime at etree at archive dot org.

If this happens, I would be more than happy to help complete the collection.

That's awesome news Chris. You're one step closer to hearing the Richardson Stadium show if this gets done.

I obviously support this and once its done I'll start uploading my Hip masters to the archive.
