Yeah it goes a number of hours at a time without working...wonder if maybe the solar storm somehow affects this? I don't know anything bout technology...only thing I can think of.

A few people (myself included) have had problems with SmartFtp and thehundredthmeridian.com too. Just try another ftp software, it should work fine.rg wrote:I can login, but once logged in I don't see any directories / files.
Using SmartFtp.

I doubt that the server goes down as much as people have speculated. When I've talked with Jerremy (owner of the site) he says it is very busy, and the connection isn't that fast. As well, your FTP software needs to be set to PASV (passive mode) in order to retrieve the file listing properly.
If your software returns an error of "Incorrect Password" and you are sure that you have it correct, it is because there are too many users on the site at the time.
The big problem is that we, as a community, need more FTP servers. Some of the other fan communities that I am a part of have many great FTP sites (even when the fanbase is much smaller). Why don't we have more sites? I ran an FTP, but it was attacked constantly by leechers, and people were constantly emailing me with problems, rather than looking at the help page. It wears a person out.
I've been thinking about a membership funded FTP site. A monthly fee from all of the users would cover the cost of a dedicated high speed connection (commercial DSL or similar), and the computer/maintenance costs. Each month all the accounts would be discarded, and new ones created for those who had paid their subscription fee. NO PROFIT WOULD BE MADE. THE BOOKS WOULD BE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. MEMBERSHIP PER MONTH WOULD BE CAPPED TO ENSURE SPEED.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Rg,
I too had the same issue with SmartFTP. All you need to do is go into TOOLS-->
SETTINGS
In the left pane select TRANSFER
In the top section of the right pane where it says "Directory Listing Options", make sure only "Show all files (-a)" and "Recursive (-R)" are checked. All others should be unchecked. I hope this helps. It took me a long time to figure out what was going on!
Cheers!

Chris;
Regarding the FTP, cool. Nice idea but I don't know if it'll work. I've hosted an FTP before and I share your pain when it comes to leechers and emails from newbs reporting problems that are not on my end but their end.
Anyways, it can be a pain in the ass to host a site let alone trying to manage one. Paying that kind of money to have an ISP or other business host an FTP isn't cheap. You would be adding in a finance management to keep track of who paid and who didn't month to month. Issuing new passwords to those who have paid and deleting the people who haven't. Then if not enough people pay you'd me left holding the bag to pay for the hosting of the site which wouldn't be fun. Unless of course the site is free or you work for an ISP that's willing to let you host a site and use their bandwidth. Those days are long gone unfortunately.
Jeremy, the owner of the 100thmeridian.com, while he and I have had some words (not pleasant ones) behind the scenes, I give him kudos for hosting the site for the Hip fanbase. A properly run and managed site takes a lot of commitment and responsibility.
Good luck Chris.

Thanks High! I realize that it may be tough to manage, but I think that it would be worth it.
--------
If people are interested, please let me know. As well, please provide your input.
I already have a computer and 80Gb of HD space that I am willing to dedicate to the cause. I also have over 250 boots that I will start the site with (SHN & MP3) along with 50 or so mpegs.
All I need is help with the annual costs = membership fee.

i think that part of the problem is that any joe six pack and sally housecoat can access that ftp.
what we need is a server where you need to be a member of this site to access. ie: you need to register to get the login info.
this board is small enough that if word didn't spread too quickly, we should be able to keep it fairly well maintained.
another thought would be to set up an http server. does anyone here have access to a server that we could run apache on and set up a server like that?
i dunno, just a couple of thoughts.
