this must be the billionth post asking for help how to do this. trey from betree was very helpful pointing me in the direction of the software but i really don't want to bother him anymore. the instructions for xact say encoding and decoding are self-explanatory, so he doesn't bother saying how to do it. well i'm not a computer expert, and it's NOT obvious how to do it. i don't even know which action i'm supposed to take, much less how to do it. is there a website somewhere that actually explains this? i would be more than glad to seed shows (though i doubt i'll figure out how to do that either) instead of just "leeching", but this whole business is not user-friendly. i guess free live hip shows are only to be enjoyed by people with PHD's in computer science. all i have is a BA in english but it is rare to find instructions actually written in english instead of all this jargon. help anyone?

01: Launch the program

02: Choose the Decode tab.

03: Drag your FLAC or SHN files into the window.
04: Click the decode button. (Set the other options as you see fit.)

Some of the graphics may be slightly different as this is based on the Mac version. As well, what is so difficult? What part of the program is giving you trouble?

i get an applescript error: can't make class id 49 of class id 48 of class id 29 into type reference. (-1700). also, the program automatically switches to the encode tab wheneve i drag a file over. it doesn't stay on decode, and the file only shows in the encode area.
as for the other settings, i wouldn't have the slightest idea what to do. is there just a page somewhere that explains the fundamental idea of all this?

I don't know if there is a page that details it... it is free open source software, so you get what you get.
It sounds like something did not get installed correctly on your system
Why not try another program? It's also free and fairly straightforward.

Just to eliminate a possibility (I don't use xACT, but did a quick google search for it), could it be that you are not running the latest xACT version (xACT - 1.59)?
The reason I ask is because it seems the latest version has been upgraded to deal with the latest version of FLAC (1.1.3), whereas the previous version only handled FLAC 1.1.1.
Don't know if that would make a difference, but you might want to check it out.
Good luck.

? does that mean i need other software. please somebody just explain the fundamental idea of all this. step1 step2... i'm not pulling your leg, and i'm not stupid. it's just that etree lists a bunch of different software but i'm not clear on what does what. are you saying i need flac 1.1.1 to compress the hip concert i downloaded BEFORE i decode it in xact? i thought it was already compressed, that that was the whole point so you can download it faster. i really don't understand the basic idea.

The audio files are compressed (aka encoded) with FLAC. Once you download the FLAC files you can either play them directly using a program like "Cog" for Mac; or you can decompress (aka decode) them to an audio file like WAV or AIFF.johno wrote:? does that mean i need other software. please somebody just explain the fundamental idea of all this. step1 step2... i'm not pulling your leg, and i'm not stupid. it's just that etree lists a bunch of different software but i'm not clear on what does what. are you saying i need flac 1.1.1 to compress the hip concert i downloaded BEFORE i decode it in xact? i thought it was already compressed, that that was the whole point so you can download it faster. i really don't understand the basic idea.
And since you are having issues with xACT, why not try a different program that does the same thing????
I linked you to a program called Switch, earlier in the thread: http://www.nch.com.au/switch/
Get it, and you should be set.

He's using a Mac... so WinAmp is not an option.Daryl24 wrote:If your not burning it to a cd or putting it on an mp3 player. You could just download the flac codec for the media player that you use to listen to music. Actually if you have winamp media player it plays flac files natively.

Just out of curiosity, are you sure you completely downloaded the .flac files?
You would surely get an error regardless of which decoder you use if you didn't download them fully.
(Just trying to cover all the bases here)
Which show did you download?

Just to check it out, I used xACT for the first time to decode a .flac file to a .wav file.
I started the program, then clicked the "decode" tab along the top. It took me to the decode screen. I dragged and dropped the .flac file from my desktop, into the greyed window. Then I clicked on WAV under "Output Format:". Finally, I clicked the "Decode" button. A screen asked me where to save the output file, I chose Desktop, and in 10 seconds, I had my .wav file.

I would say this is why you get this:johno wrote:also, the program automatically switches to the encode tab wheneve i drag a file over. it doesn't stay on decode, and the file only shows in the encode area.
Have you tried selecting the decode tab, then hitting the "add" button instead of doing the drag and drop?johno wrote:i get an applescript error: can't make class id 49 of class id 48 of class id 29 into type reference. (-1700).
