Hey folks. I'm a bit of a newbie, so forgive me if this topic has been covered. I did a search, but to no avail. Anyhoo, with all the torrents out there on hiptracker and bt.etree, I've noticed something peculiar about the live .shn and .flac show files circulating: there doesn't seem to be any standardization when it comes to naming the files.

I'm also a huge Dave Matthews Band fan and, as I'm sure you're all aware, DMB allows taping of their shows. A number of individuals within the DMB community have brought standardization to naming the files for the shows. For example, dmb1993-10-03.dsbd.shnf (or for .flac we might get dmb2005-09-07.akg481.flac16) gives us the band, the date of the show, the source and the file type. the venue is never listed because the .txt file will invariably have that information.

I think that this type of file naming allows people who collect live shows to keep track of everything they need to know about the show they have obtained. Plus it looks a lot cleaner. I think it would be great for the Hip community to do the same. For example, when a person uploads a show for torrenting, the file name could be labeled as tth1992-05-16.sbd.shnf (as an aside, none of the shows I've used as examples are necessarily actual shows). I know some people do this, which is cool, but it would be helpful if everyone did this.

Anyways, just some ramblings from a guy who's trying to assist with the proliferation of live shows from the greatest band Canada has ever produced.

Great idea... and one that we've (I've) tried to implement before. I get asked regularly how to name files, create torrents, etc, etc and some users follow it, but often times they are simply uploading a show that they acquired through another source, and they keep the file structure intact.

I'll add another point to the Tracker FAQ page located here.

first off, greetings from am.org :) second, i think this is a great idea. i think that part of the problem is that there isn't the large taping/trading base with hip fans as there is with DMB fans.

it would be a very difficult task to move to standard filenames. of course, that doesn't mean we shouldn't try. :)

i would also like to see the spreading of mp3 sourced shows stopped, but that will never happen. there are just too many mp3 shows out there right now.

am.org ? Really mark? I had no idea you were so into psychology! Hmmm.... http://www.am.org/

It took me a few seconds to figure out antsmarching.org...

But you're right, it would be great to cut out the MP3s, but we have a small community, and there are so many great shows that are only available in MP3.

Hey man! Thanks for the greetings from am.org :) . I figured there had to be more people over there who were into the Hip!

I agree it would be difficult to standardize filenames, but you're right, we should give it a shot.

As for the spreading of mp3 sourced shows... ouch. Louie Rendek would have a fit if it were DMB. :P

I'm all for standardization, especially with torrents flying here and there, but I've gone through my shows and added the showname to most of my folders. What does a date give you? I can barely tell you what today's date is, but if you say the Gino show I can give you a pretty good rundown on the show...
