I e-mailed the band, and they gave me permission. If they try to take my recorder, I'm going to show the e-mail to them (just for backup).

Thats a good idea, just start setting up your gear before the Hip start, not before and you should be fine.
I need 2 Kingston Tickets, please help.

Missy. Just hope the security believes that the print off of the email is legit and not just made up by you. Who could you ask if they dont?

Im sort of seeing a change in the attitude towards taping both vid and audio. Mainly because I see more and more of it for sale on Ebay. The idea all along and from the words of the band was that it was for the joy of the fans and not for personal financial gain. Let's hope it doesn't ruin it for all of us or we'll be back sneaking in MD's and hiding mics in our hats and jackets. :?

That's true, but it's got a date and everything. I guess short of them going up to the band and asking, there's no way to tell. Dang. I'm thinking of hiding a mini recorder in my shoe.

The only problem I have heard so far, was a video recording being confiscated in NY, that was house rules. The band had no say. So far I am aware of the 2 ny shows being taped (number 2 the taper had a 7 foot high stand) no hiding that. Also I know montreal, Halifax and St. Johns were all recorded with no problems, the big thing is they don't allow soundboard recording anymore I guess. I say bring your equipment and if security hassles you tell them the band allows it, if it is still an issue go back to the car, and sneak it in!!!! In NY the taper, who i wish would come forward with a copy, walked right in with a big bag of equipment, no problem. Also never let them take your equipment, they can have the tape not your equipment, they have no right to that. Just my 2 cents :?

Yea.. it seems to depend on what the venue says. I'm going to the House of Blues show in Orlando on 10/20, and they have a no video/audio taping policy...

I might try and stealth it though, I'm not sure. 8)

In Camrose they were big a$$holes about it.
Apparently only LA and NY have a no taping policy. All other venues seem to defer to the Hip's wishes.

HOB seems to have a universal no video/audio policy, which STINKS because they book tons of taper-friendly bands.

A friend of mine has tried to tape there a few times and I think she's only succeeded once (and that was only after a MEMBER OF THE BAND came over and rescued her from the security guys trying to take her equipment away...)

That's good to hear :) I think the one here in Orlando is just evil. I talked to another taper I know though who's recorded there, and he gave me some suggestions on how to get my stuff in the door (if I make a big enough bitch of myself they should hopefully let me set up behind the soundboard.. better than nothing!)

Check the bands that allow taping web site:

http://btat.wagnerone.com/

The hip do have an entry on there.
If you get grief from the venue, politely tell them of the band's policy
If that doesn't work, politely ask to see the sound man, production manager or someone else on the crew who will clear up the problem.

The key is to be polite. The venue doesn't have to let your eqipment in, they do have the final say, so if you come off as a big jerk, you ruin your chances and everyone else's as well.

If you see unauthorized recordings for sale on ebay, mail their abuse address and let them know this is an illegal sale. They will take care of it.

I also like to mail a few of the people bidding on the show and let them know that they can get the show (from me if I have it) for as little as the cost of discs, postage and packaging.

Most people are really shocked that there are others out there willing to give them this music for free. I enjoy doing this, it takes one more customer away from bootleggers, if all the customers go away, these leeches will go elsewhere to make their cash.

If you have any problems getting in with your gear!
Use these names:

Mark Vrekeen (Hip's sound guy)
Rick Wellington (Hip's Head Of Security)

I have had only 1 problem from 5 shows! And that was night #1 from the Molsom Amphitheater, way back in Augest.
hope this helps......
