It's connected to them meeting Jim Ellison who was the lead singer/songwriter for Material Issue. He killed himself in 1996. I'm sure some people already know this. Material Issue was a great power pop trio from suburban Chicago. Their first album, International Pop Overthrow, is great. I guess The Hip and Material Issue played in New York and they hung out a little bit. Gordon introduced this song in a weird way that others could probably quote but it was along the lines of them having met him and him dying. Obviously, the song says they weren't the best of friends, but it's an interesting way to talk about him because even though they didn't know him all that well, he was still someone they had met and he died.lefty120 wrote:They always seem to play escape when in Chicago. At least the last several shows anyway.
As I mentioned earlier, Gordon also mentioned ex-Wilco member Jay Bennett who was found dead last week. The way he mentioned him, it seemed like they had met him too and spent some time with him. Gordon called him a great/beautiful person. I forget the exact phrase.
