I found this guide on frequency & spectral analysis in the forums at u2torrents.com. It doesn't mean for certain that a file is lossless or lossy, but it can give hints to the range of the music file. I've done the analysis from time to time on some of the music files I'd downloaded/traded for, to see what shows up, and for the most part they look okay. What I should do is take a known lossless .wav file, do the analysis, and then compress it to .mp3 and do the analysis to compare.
