Jeez, how did I miss this doozie back then??

I had the pleasure of meeting both Mark and Bauer at the first Calgary club show and both were bang up guys.

As well, Rory is prince among men in the Hip world, as far as I'm concerned.

Wow, what a thread.
I too got started w/my Hip collection from Rory. I think it was linked from the Hip site but it's going back a few years so I don't remember now but what a thrill it was to find out that someone was willing to trade or just send out shows to spread the joy of a band. That really does mean a lot to some people, myself included. I have learned a lot from this form about torrents, flac vs mp3 etc. I've always wanted to get some gear and do it myself but never took the leap to spend the money, or even where to start.
Thank you to Rory and thank you to everyone that has helped me out. And also to those that tape. If you share or not it doesn't matter.

I'll try to keep this brief.

First off, just like almost everyone else, my collection got its start from Rory. He was helpful, generous and most importantly, a very kind person. Thanks Rory!

Secondly, I met Mark a few times on the great Summer '02 western states tour, beginning with back-to-back nights in Denver. I believe it was about a year later that I posted a message on the Henhouse mailing list essentially calling him out for what I percieved to be a failure to live up to promises of recordings surfacing etc. Shortly after posting, I realized my post was uncalled for. Mark very generously reached out to me and asked me which shows I wanted to get ahold of. I gave him a list (yes, a list! where do I get my balls?) of four shows from that tour I made it to. He hooked me up with pristine, complete recordings of all 4.

The bottom line is this: No one has ANY right whatsoever to tell another person what his / her priorities should be. If Mark wants to film a stretch of shows and leave the tapes alone for the next 4 years, that's his right as a human being. It's a free country, man. People do whatever the hell they want to do all damn day without the input from strangers on a message board, and that's the way it should be. To suggest that a fellow fan "owes" us something is beyond ludicrous.

All of that said, I do think that the time might be right to explore possibilities of the IVL-era videos being worked on. HOWEVER, that is MARK'S CALL. Who can blame the guy for not wanting to just mail his personal, irreplaceable property to a bunch of complete strangers? If I filmed a bunch of shows, I sure as hell wouldn't be mailing my tapes to someone I don't know who just begged enough for me to want to get him / her off my back.

The bump I gave this thread was intentional as a result of something that was discussed when we (a handful of tapers/editors/traders who have a connection to this thread/issue) were all in Montreal. And although it seems like history, the same thing goes on today...

mark, thanks for finally sharing something lol....To ALL the tapers, editors, etc, you all rock, cause I've gotten hundreds of amazing boots without having to tape any of them myself....so if someone tapes a show and doesn't share it right away cause they have better stuff to do, so be it....I certainly am not willing to put in 1/4 of the time Chris and the others put in....and I don't EXPECT anything.... this thread was a very interesting read, and to be honest, it's really fucking sad that this shit still occurs today....

I don't understand the whole taping process, I mean I can't even figure out how to do downloads and/or trades (although I wish I could) but I think its cool that there are people out there doing this. I have some live stuff and I like having something unique, something different from the album cut. Hopefully the tapers are doing it because they enjoy it. And I hope they know that there are tons of people out there that are greatful that shows are being taped.

Might I ask why we tape?

What is the point of the tracker?

It seems this is a still a touchy topic since this thread was more then two years old when Chris decided to bring it back up.
The bump I gave this thread was intentional as a result of something that was discussed when we (a handful of tapers/editors/traders who have a connection to this thread/issue) were all in Montreal. And although it seems like history, the same thing goes on today...
what was discussed?

As long as bands allow us to tape you are going to get people asking you for a copy of the show. I don't understand what is wrong with this.

If you handful of tapers (montreal) are getting sick of people asking for boots then what is the point of taping or the tracker? Is it really a crime to ask for a boot that you know is out there?

Do you tape for the sake of taping or to be able to listen to the concert again later? As you tapers know taping a show is a major hassle. You don't get to dance or sing and are preoccupied with your gear if you are video taping you are constantly watching the monitor or looking through the lens, so taping for the sake of taping seems ridiculus to me. I tape so I can enjoy the show again later and if I made a dvd or cd of it for myself it is EXTREMELY easy to make additional copies for other people. So again I guess we have to ask ourselves why do we tape?

The problem has never been to share or not to share (that is your own choice) the problem is If you say you are going to share something then share it. If you have no intentions of sharing then say so no problem.

happy taping! See ya all in January :thumb:

What was discussed in Montreal related to this thread; beyond that, it's none of your business.

The point of the tracker was I wanted a way to get more shows, and share the ones I have. I started it before I knew any of the tapers, or traders, as I do now.

The point of taping is that it is something that we enjoy doing. What more needs to be said about it? The fact that you don't understand means nothing to me.

What have you taped and shared?

And nothing is wrong with asking in a polite, respectful manner. Once. And accepting the answer, without arguing, whether you like it or not.

I like to tape, and therefore I am happy that bands like the Hip allow us to tape.

I also do not mind sharing, once I am satisfied with the results. Sometimes it takes weeks/months to get tapes from everyone involved, and then putting the material together.

We do this as a hobby and not a JOB, so we take our time and enjoy the process.

Shows will be posted when we are done, there is nothing more to say.

Cheers...

I video taped both Regina shows in 2002 and both Calgary shows in 2002. I have shared these with anyone who asks. I also share any of my more than 200 hip boots to anyone who asks. I have also taped both audio and video for 10 Sadies shows. These I do not trade because Dallas from The Sadies has asked me not to share them. They don't mind if you tape for yourself. I have also taped a couple of Greg Keelor shows and trade them with anyone who asks.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. You brought it up when you said this

I totally agree, so when I asked politely and was told no problem only to be ignored later makes me a bad guy for asking in the first place? AGAIN IF YOU SAY YOU ARE GOING TO SHARE THAN SHARE, IF YOU HAVE NO INTENTION OF SHAING THAN SAY SO, NO PROBLEM.

I've got to say, I'm new to this whole set up (relatively anyway). But all the people I've dealt with regarding sharing and trading of files/tapes/whatever have been extremely kind, patient and helpful. Chris particularly has been extremely giving of both time and patience. Dustin, BigA and anyone else I've contacted regarding it have also been great guys!

I just hope you can all make it over to the UK when the Hip next comne over... I feel I owe you some beers.
