not sure if this is in the right place, and apologies if it's not.
I've downloaded some Hip stuff from bt.hipfans.com and I want to seed it so others can get it more quickly... do I need to do anything for this, or just keep the material on my hard drive and listed on bit torrent?
Thanks in advance for the help,
Matt

Now MattyM... I will caution you that the tracker monitors ratios and will be issuing you a warning soon if you do not improve. Once a warning has been issued, you have 10 days to improve your ratio or you will be banned from the site.
Right now your ratio is VERY low (0.02; it has to be >0.40).
I would stop all of your downloads, and concentrate on the uploads (seeding) until your ratio is back closer to 1.0.

Yeah, this is what I don't get, I have two things that I should be seeding and two things that I'm downloading, so surely my ratio should be pretty good, right?
EDITED: Think it might have a little to do with me downloading a few things at once and inadvertantly deleting a nearly complete Starter Kit torrent and having to start over.
Cheers for the warning chris!

Your ratio will only go up if people happen to be downloading the shows you are seeding. If it says "0 peers" you have not uploaded anything. I had this ratio problem a few weeks ago but was able to bring it up by just being patient, also downloading shows that lots of people seemed to be leeching, and then seeding them as long as possible.

But what do you do if, like me, you have almost zero content to upload?
I have a grand total of 2 shows which I suspect most people will already have, so don't expect a great ratio whatsit from that..
Hmm..

That's why Bit Torrent is a good system; you don't need any content in order to grow your collection. Bit Torrent is a sharing based system - as you download a show, you are also uploading what you've downloaded to other users. As long as you're hardware and software are configured correctly, (and you are willing to contribute) you will be able to maintain a good ratio without much difficulty.Detrious wrote:But what do you do if, like me, you have almost zero content to upload?

assuming what you are downloading is popular enough to warrant more than just yourself as the downloader. The key that many torrent newbies don't realize is that when they start out they shouldn't download something that may not be popular enough to have anyone else download it after them. Also, don't download a huge file...a dvd for instance. It's wise to start off with smaller, moderately popular torrents, that are likely to have consistant traffic after you're done. Build up your ratio until you have some to spare...so to speak. Then your more at liberty to download something that may not have any more traffic after you and because of your ratio abundance, you won't be penalized. I don't think it is quite as easy as the simple give and take slogan...you need to be crafty.chris wrote:That's why Bit Torrent is a good system; you don't need any content in order to grow your collection. It is tough though... for example, I uploaded the Toledo torrent because Chris was kind enough to let me seed it, which I did (albeit very badly... thats another story). Chris also seeded it because I broke the connection, within a few days a number of people had downloaded it and nobody else wanted it, so although it got me off of a warning, I still didn't build enough of a barrier to be able to download more.
Also, no matter what I do, I have trouble with my software!

Maybe a switch to uTorrent is in order... I hear it's pretty good as well.MattyM wrote:Damn I'm good!!

You are all speaking a language I find difficult to understand.
Is there an Idiots guide? (preferrably with pictures... In crayon...)
