must-have shows ???

Hey all, I'm new here (be kind !) and pretty new to the Hip, although I have been trading for years in all sorts of bands.

I don't want to download/trade every show the Hip have ever played (fallen into that trap before

), so my question is this...if I'm only gonna get a few shows which ones should they be ?

with the risk of sounding like an asskisser, chris your dvds are top notch. i just wish i knew how to keep the chapter intact when i burn them

The Milwaukee 1998 show has always been a favorite of mine for a few reasons. The first is that it is a soundboard recording. The second is that the band was very on, and Gord was very animated.

This one is a definate to have for any collection.

pretty much anything in europe is very good. currently the 12-9-92 hamburg show is cued for me to listen. it fits on 1 cd and a quick download to get you off and listening to live stuff.

Ya Milwaukee 1998 is great, so is Toledo 1998.

But I cant believe noone has yet mentioned Camp Trillium Benefit London ON 1998 07 07. It was a MuchMusic special. It is on the tracker in audio and dvd. My favourite for years.

Thanks for all your replies ! Picked up the Milwaukee, Trillium and London shows, bought Hipeponymous and I'm now listening to the Hip pretty much non stop...funny thing is I emptied out a whole load of boxes I still had from my old place (moved 8 years ago) and found Road Apples and Day For Night pristine CDs - can't believe I didn't even know I had them and don't remember buying them...I guess that's how you know you have too many discs !

Just for fun, I thought you guys might be interested in which songs really stood out for me as a complete newbie from the limited exposure I've had so far. Probably seems like a really uninspired list to you but hey here goes...

Welcome onboard! I appreciate and enjoy your enthusiasm. Looks like you have just had an epiphany; a life-altering experience. You will never be the same again and you will wonder how you got by all that time without them.

That is a solid list. All classics and great songs indeed. But there is a great deal more awaiting your discovery. Play 'Day for Night' straight-through several times. There are few Rock albums that match that stellar effort.

I listen to The Hip all the time and pretty well nothing but - for 16 or 17 years now - and I still have amazing discoveries of mine own regularly. Their music is truly amazing.

There is always one rule-of-thumb to remember about their music: you might not like it on first, second, third listen... But after 5 or 10 listens, your sensory overload diminishes and you start to feel the incredible groove as it slowly absorbs into your nervous system.
If you dont think you like a song, put aside judgement, and be patient. Trust me.

Having all 3 of the "live downloads" series' in my posession I can easily say that the show in Ottawa is hands down the best of the three. The London show may have a few more rarities..but they aren't necessarily the band's best songs...so having said that I would add that Ottawa show from Nov 28th/2004 to my list.

bill's bar, boston(1998-08-12) is one of my favs, and also the landmark, syracuse(2000-10-03). and of course the 88 show at the horseshoe tavern and hengelo in 91.
