leeching at the tracker

hi gang,
long-time member, i read everything, but don't post often.
or, maybe i haven't read everything, because:
the hiptracker (the best thing there ever was, btw, except maybe for thehundredthmeridian, and 13/10/03 at the Hummingbird) says that "leeching is becoming a concern". i do not want to be a leech, but i do know what one is. i do not wish to be banned from downloading there... could someone often a quick tip for how to NOT be a leecher?
kind of a pre-emptive request, i guess.
best,
darren.

just open up your ports so that you can share the music as well.

and
www.portforward.com are you best starting points...
Bit Torrent is based on the assumption that each user will share (upload to other leeches on the same torrent) the information that they download. Aim for a share ratio of 1.0 or higher.

Most of the time I cannot get to 1.0 in a reasonable amount of time. I think all my relevant ports are open, but the upload rate is just so slow on most of my torrents. Wehter I download them at 100 k/s or 4 k/s, I would have to wait days to upload as much as I download in a matter of hourse. I dont WANT to be a leach, but it just never seems to make sense to me.
PS - I looked at the port forward site and didn't see anything that seemed to indicate I have a problem with ports not being open or misallocated or whatever. I'm pretty sure ports have nothing to do with it.

On a torrent with multiple leeches, you should easily max out your upload speed - I'm with Sympatico and it is capped at about 90kb/s, I think Rogers is around 50. If you aren't reaching those speeds, there is a good chance that something isn't configured properly on your computer.
It may take days to get a good share ratio, but that's how the system works. An easy way to increase stats is to reseed shows when people make a request for a seed. This helps them, and you.
Until more people start complaining, the site will continue to operate as it has since I launched it.

Wow, I guess something really isn't configured right...usually when I am done downloading, the share ratio is anywhere from .150 to .300...meaning it takes 3 to 6 times as long to upload what I downloaded. On a big torrent that can take ages. I do my best by seeding things for the first time, I figure that makes a good contribution to whatever community I'm leechign from.
