Just wondering before I open them...I went to the Future Shop sale and 50 Sony CDRs were on sale for 19.99...Sony seems like a pretty reputable name, it's not Cicera or whatever Future Shop's own brand is. I'm just wondering what people think...before I open them, has anybody experienced high failure rate or a short life after being burned?

I did a search for Sony CDR and couldn't find a thread specifically talking about good and bad brands (I found one about DVDRs), so I hope nobody already asked this.

I swear by them. From a spool of 50, I'm surprised if 2-3 fail
during burning. Also, they're the only brand I can find that still
support 1x burning, all other "reputable" brands have a minimum
of 2x (ie. Fujifilm, TDK...)

Sony's are my preferred brand of CDRs, and just as "digital_graffiti" said, I'd be surprised if you have any failures because of the disks.

you would get 2-3 fails on a 50 pack? damn that is a lot.

i buy the gneric CDR's because i get 100 for $19.99. of the last 200 that i have burned, i got 1 coaster.

overall, i would say that i have burned close to 800 of them and i could count on 1 hand the number of bad burns i got

i like the ridatas i picked up 50 for $10, no problems with them so far.

I used to use Maxell CDRs, man what an exercise in frustration. I remember trying to burn a 10-pak and throwing out 7 of them that failed. Total garbage. I don't mind losing 2-3 per 50-spool of Sonys - I usually run Azureus, AVG antivirus, and ZoneAlarm when burning (I know, not supposed to...) so I'm happy to get a 94% success rate.

i've been using tdk's for the last 2 years and never once had a bad burn, i also use tdk "music only" cdrs for my stand alone burner thats in part of my stereo set up and also never had a bad burn with them

i have used sony's "music only" with my stand alone as well and had no problems but they cost more than the tdk's,

anyway you got a pretty good deal and i doubt you'll have problems with the discs

Where are you guys getting these CDR's at these prices.... I thought I had a deal when I got 50 for $20-25 or so... but 100 for $19.99?

The problem with the cd's you can buy in mass amount like 100 or 200 for $20 are garbage. You get what you pay for. Sure you can burn to them and not get any coasters but try playing the cd a couple years later or after multiple times in the car, cd player etc. You won't be able to because the emulsion is flaked off or stratched. You rarely get that kind of problem with better quality cd blanks from Sony or Verbatim or Imation.
I'd only use those cheap cd's for my personal use or if I didn't care if the cd didn't work at a later time and I could burn another copy.

a lot of people say that, but i have generic cd's that i burned 4 or 5 years ago, and they still play as good today as they did then

I started my bootlegs collection with two 100-packs of plain silver no-name CDRs. They weren't even in a spindle with labels, they were just in a plain plastic wrapper...got them for 30 bucks each. That was in about 1999 and five years later they still play fine. These days, now that I know there's supposedly a difference in quality, I stick with Memorex or Sony. It's only $10 or $15 more for a universally accepted brand name.

The ONLY difference I have found with no-names is a slightly high failure rate. I just got through a 100-pack of Memorexes with 1 failure, but those no-names five years ago probably had half a dozen failures per 100. Still a bargain, and after all these years they're holding up just fine.
