I'm hoping someone here can help me out. I'm new to the whole DVD burning thing (which is weird since I'm a computer science student), but anyway, myself and a colleague are trying to figure things out here at the office before we go and waste our own money on DVD-Rs or RWs or whatever (office supplies rule!).

Right now what we're trying to do is burn some mpeg files that he's downloaded onto a DVD. I know how to burn mpegs to a VCD -- Nero does everything for you anyway, but VCD isn't what we want. Now I've burnt the Wasaga show successfully, but everything was in DVD-ready format already. So I'm guessing what I have to do is convert the .mpeg files to .VOB files so that they can be brought into the TS_VIDEO folder...... correct? But what program do I use to do this, and do I have to use something else to separate the audio from the video?? Geez, I thought I'd be able to find more info on then I have so far.

If anyone could lead me in the right direction I would be very thankful!!

I've been working on a similar project recently, and have discovered a wealth of information at http://www.afterdawn.com. You need a DVD authoring program to turn those files into VOB files. I've been using NeroVision Express 2 to do this. If the video files are compressed (DiVX or XViD) format, then you need to decode them to mpgs (with the proper codec), then author them. Thanks a lot! I was actually at that site earlier, but couldn't find what I was looking for in the Guides section -- now I did though. I think I'm starting to get the hang of it... one question though... when encoding (decoding?) to VOB format is it normal for it to take a long time?? A long time as in an hour or so for roughly a 2-hour movie (I'm running P4 2.6GHz processor with 512MB dual channel RAM)?

I've been working with smaller mpg files, so I'm not sure how long a full length movie would take. An hour doesn't surprise me though. You could try using IfoEdit to change the mpgs into VOB files, it's pretty fast, but I've found that NeroVision is easier to use, and easier to make menus etc.
