Those who know me from my prior post should recognize that I have been harping on the Hip needing to do a "live download" series for ever!

I am sooo siked to finally see it's in place but I have to be honest...

the emperor peguin has no clothes..

Gord's vocals suck in this concert (7/1/04)...

It's frustating because the rest of the band is SPOT On, great backing vocals by Paul and Gord S., killer setlist, great artwork, amazing sound, etc, etc...

I've been noticing that alot of Gord's vocal performances during the early 2004 canadian dates were spotty at best ..
seemed like he was bored with the songs, or his voice was hoarse, didn't sing the classics the right way, and this Toronto show is no exception...

"Grace" has little or no Gord rants..

He almost is making a joke of his vocals in "Wheat kings" and "Blow"..
and his voice is god-awful on "Good Life", "Courage", and "Meridian"

"NOIS" is the most listless vocal rendition I have ever heard..like he wanted to get it over ASAP..

where is the Gordie "punch' of the old days..?

Maybe the visual of this concert eclipsed Gord's vocal shortcomings.. I don't know..

Let me praise the band's management for finally finding a venue that can earn cash for the Band while we "Hip boot maniacs" can get some soundboards..

But I put this show alongside my "Live between us" CD..on the shelf
and keep listening to the Bill's Bar 1998 and Chicago 2002 shows that Rory gave me until the next release ....

here's hoping Gord Sinclair nails it with the next "Live Series- Volume 2" release..

anybody got any suggestions?

I think you're being a little, no, A LOT picky. It's the best soundboard live show release in a few years and you should enjoy it if you're a Hip fan.

Dude, its the ONLY SBD release in many years...
I am as true a fan as you but I'm not deaf..

Also, I can name 5 other 2004 Hip shows that the band played this tour with Gordie's vocals were AWESOME!

I saw them in Boston and Gord'd rendition of Mean Streak and ABAC were excellent (not name a few)

I'm not attacking the band, I'm just surpirised his vocal perfromance wasn't a factor in choosing this show..

I'd love to enjoy this but Gordie's vocals just suck..IMO

I couldn't disagree more. In fact, you've made me wonder if you downloaded the right show. Perhaps you downloaded a String Cheese Incident show instead.

The concert as a whole is perfectly reflective of the performance, which was burning of energy and fire. Gord was right into it from the getgo. In fact, it was my ninth Hip/ Gord solo concert since July of 2002 and it was the easily the most into it I've seen him. He didn't seem bored for one second.

Frankly, I don't see how the number of rants makes or breaks a performance. Hell, I'd argue that a lack of rants indicates that he's so into the songs that he's got nothing else on his mind.

Just awful!
wrong tempo too!

Now, don't get me wrong, he can NAIL the vocals on this song..
I think the 1/1/00 version from the Air Canada Centetr is one of the most amazing performancesof "wheat kings" I've ever heard..

But this, this is just awful...

I thought Gord S. sounded real bad on Poets. Does Paul sing on Poets as well?

Overall I think Gord sounds fine. I haven't listened to the show in it's entirety, but I think the first disc sounds just fine.

scott if you are looking for perfection in songs stick to your album version of songs

live is just that live with all kinds of variables wheat kings was the second to last song of the show.

what would you like them to do stop touring to go in the studio to overdub where you think its wrong . if you don't like it then don't buy the next one

Not the sort of complaint I'd expect, the vocals? They sounded fine to me, if anything I expected to hear people complain about Makeshift. It's a definite screwup, one of the more noticeable from recent memory! But Gord does manage to work it out and the result is quite entertaining.

I stated in my original email that I was siked about the Live bootleg series and if you all like the first show in this series, you are entitiled to your opinion

I've noticed Gord seems to purposely not keep time a lot of the time now a days. My theory is that he probably got tired of hearing the crowd sing over top of him, so he sings the words slightly different than the album version to throw the crowd off a bit.

CheeseStrings are pretty good for being fake cheese and all.
Something about fake cheese makes me think of home...

Ya know...I hate to flame, but if you're on the pipe (like you must be) you may need a torch, so forgive me; I'm just trying to be helpful.

Maybe I'm biased because I was at the LBU Cobo show, but saying any show is "ten times better" than LBU is pretty extreme, although you're certainly entitled to your opinion. Mine's just different. Give an uninitiated listener a Double-Suicide or Kllerwhaletank boot and they're not likely to "get" it. They might think it's kinda cool, but it's not typically gonna make them run out and start buying CDs. Give that same listener a copy of LBU (a legitimate store-bought copy) as I've done more than a few times (I'm on my 7th copy) and not only will they almost always "get" it, they'll almost always run out and buy CDs. Does that mean LBU is better than the aforementioned boots? No, it just means that it's different, and may appeal to people who haven't been to nine shows since 2002. LBU is perfect combination of all the elements that perfectly illustrate the vibe and energy of a Hip show, regardless of the listener's knowledge or awareness of Hipstory.

I can't help but recall the scene from "Airplane" where the little kid is telling Kareem Abdul-Jabar that his dad says "you don't work hard enough on defense... you don't even run down court...you don't really try...except during the playoffs" and he grabs the errant child by the collar and screams "The hell I don't. LISTEN KID. I've been hearing that crap ever since I was at UCLA. I'm out there busting my buns every night. Tell your old man to drag Walton and Lanier up and down the court for 48 minutes."

I have a humorous visual of Gord doing something similar, grabbing your collar and telling you that you should try singing your balls off every night while people are throwin' shit & wavin' flags & t-shirts in your face & a zillion flash-bulbs are goin' off & hardcore fans that know the words better you do are screaming them off-key...

Gord may have been hoarse. He may have been distracted by life. He may have been a lot of things. Music is their work! While we should all have such “easy” jobs, you can’t tell me that you don’t have days where you don’t want to get out of bed, go to school, go to work, or otherwise face responsibility. Now imagine that feeling when you know ten thousand people have been waiting two years to hear you perform their favorite version of their favorite song…

Hmmm, suddenly being a rock & roll star doesn’t sound like such an “easy” job.

I've noticed that his voice often sounds better later in the tour than in the beginning; it’s called getting back in the zone. But there's nothing, not a hundred sound-board boots that can match the emotion of being front & center for the first show of a tour, or any show of the tour, for that matter, even if every subtle nuance doesn’t meet my expectations.

From what I’ve been reading, the folks at livedownloads.com have been very accommodating in regards to making sure every customer got the full show, replacing a corrupt file and ensuring that everyone who had a problem was notified and given reasonable time to get it. Perhaps you could email them and let them know how unsatisfied you are with their product and their choice (or was The Hip’s choice) of shows. Maybe they’ll bring Gord into a studio and have him re-dub the vocals so they meet your standards. Maybe they’ll ask him to do an updated version of Double-Suicide or Killerwhaletank…

Dude, I’m sure you’re a great guy and a dedicated fan, but there’s almost 2,000 registered users here at the ‘base, and while I’m sure everyone hasn’t purchased the show, you’re the only one grousing about it.

I’m not sure what that means, but it must mean something.
