Does anyone know if the Hip or Gordon Downie have ever done a "Wreck of the Edumund Fitzgerald" cover? Sorta an homage to Gordo?

I've seen that track floating around file sharing systems for many years, although I cannot find any reference to The Hip ever recording that track. Additionally, the versions I downloaded, were never actually that song, nor a song by The Hip.

Do you have a version that you think is legit? If so, send it over.

I have it, but I have no idea if it's the Hip. I've always wondered.

Also, it's hardly even a legit cover of the song period! It doesn't sound like Wreck at all, you can't imagine actually trying to sing the words over it. It's just some meandering studio demo...whether it's the Hip or not, I really don't think it's really Lightfoot's song.

The Hip were playing the Corel Centre in Kanata, ON on November 28th, 1996. They were in the middle of At the Hundredth Meridian, starting to jam, when Gord Sinclair started plucking out the haunting bassline of Edmund Fitzgerald. The band followed suit, and Gord Downie proceeded to sing his own version, with his own improvised lyrics to the song, basically making fun of Mike Harris. The recording is out there, and it is well worth the time and effort to get it.
