The Tragically Hip's performance on Thursday night, will be webcast live on their website

(FORT ALBANY, ON – Wednesday, 01 February 2012) - Canadian legends The Tragically Hip, along with celebrated novelist Joseph Boyden, will be participating in this year’s Great Moon Gathering. The annual event, held on the west coast of James Bay in Ontario’s pristine Arctic lowlands, will gather in Fort Albany, February 15-17, and include the Cree First Nations of Attawapiskat, Peawanuck, Kashechewan, Moose Factory, and Fort Albany.

With a focus on both traditional and contemporary aboriginal education, the Great Moon Gathering celebrates the strengths and diversity of the Cree Nation. Over forty workshops will be offered, and are as varied as Cree language, sweat lodge, moccasin and hand drum making, classroom management, and early education.

“The moment I first stepped foot on the shores of James Bay, I knew the Tragically Hip had to go there, to the birthplace of our country,” said Gord Downie. The band’s excited. We’re going to hang out, talk, and listen. We have a fresh batch of songs we want to play, for both old friends and new.”

Joseph Boyden adds, “Recent coverage of reserves such as Attawapiskat only captures one part of a story that’s much deeper, nuanced, and beautiful than most Canadians know. The Hip and I are coming up to James Bay to show our love and support for a people and a culture that transcends so many of the negative stereotypes that have been floated the last months.”

The Tragically Hip's performance on Thursday night, will be webcast live on their website, so check out http://www.thehip.com for more details.

Damn! Somebody needs to capture this so we can hear some of the new songs. I'd do it myself, but I'm a technical idiot and don't have a clue how to do it.

I hate to be Debbie Downer here, but what do you think the chances are of this webcast working? Do you think "they" are prepared for 1000s, possibly 10,000s of viewers?

I doubt that "they" would attempt it if "they" weren't prepared.

There's a big machine of a record label behind The Hip that can make things happen when needed.

In the same boat as you ikky99. I doubt the community has any type of fibre running to it. The stream will be over satelitte or over hopping radio towers to a streaming server located some where. I hope everyone in the community is off the computer and at the show during the stream. Don't expect anything HD, but my fingers are crossed.

Why are people assuming that there will be video? I'm betting it's only audio.

I also won't be surprised if they have difficulty, internet connection HAS to be a good one and there is so much more that could go wrong in the transfer. Wilco has done many many webcasts and I believe they had difficulties not only in the first few they did but have had a couple drops when they knew what they were doing. A lot of things need to go right and I hope they do.

"webcast" is, indeed, vague.

MAv? You out there chief? Can you help us out with some details?

Technology is pretty sophisticated these days, and I'm pretty sure MAv knows what he's doing. (I'm assuming he'll be running this). Didn't the Hip do a similar webcast from somewhere in B.C. on the '09 tour? That one went off without a hitch if I remember correctly. The last webcast I watched was U2's Glastonbury performance last year, and that one worked fine as well. I'm sure tomorrow night's show will be fine.

And I agree, some more info on this would be nice.

I've seen webcasts from smaller bands that went off perfectly fine.

With that said, those bands weren't playing anywhere near the Arctic circle.

In honor of tonight's, I just purchaysed 8 Hip CDs @ HMV for $5/each. That's right children - 8 compact discs. Man, they sound fantastic cranked!

Favorite line of the day so far:

"Like anyone I knew a Dave
Drove a Plymouth Shallow Grave
Said, "My girl don't just walk, she unfurls."

Genius.

Carry on.
